Aleph One: Bringing biofeedback to the UK

One aspect of the company's activities is the supply of specialised psychological equipment. Aleph One was the first company outside the USA to sell biofeedback instruments, and continues to supply hospitals and clinics and private users with instruments which reveal the state of some aspect of the body, by means of a Feedback signal, so that the user can learn to alter that aspect.

The Relaxometer®

Aleph One's best-selling biofeedback instrument is the Relaxometer®, which measures the user's level of arousal (and therefore stress) by picking up signals from the user via electrodes, usually fastened to the fingers.

Changes in the level of stress are translated into rising and falling tones, so users can hear these changes. For example, users can hear proof that their relaxation exercises are working and producing a genuine reduction in their stress levels: this improves confidence and enables the user to learn techniques which are guaranteed to reduce their stress levels.

Many years of experience show that almost anyone can use the Relaxometer to become more relaxed. If they learn this in a relaxing situation, they can use the skill in more taxing situations. These instruments are widely used in the management of many kinds of stress and in the control of high blood pressure.

Other instruments

Other Aleph One biofeedback instruments are used to help control of blood flow, to control migraine, and control of brain electrical activity. Biofeedback is especially useful in rehabilitation of damaged muscles where it can show the user that they do still have control over their body, and that they can learn to improve their control.

Another instrument is used in the rehabilitation of physically handicapped people. A muscle may seem to be paralysed, but in fact be active only at a very low level. Feeding back that low level of activity allows the user to begin to control, and then to increase, that activity. This type of apparatus can also be used to relax a muscle that has got 'stuck' in a tense and painful state.

A version is available for Acorn computers, where a target can be put on the screen, and the user can learn to control a moving trace on the screen and make it track the target. An extension of this is used to control simple video games, which are much more fun than the exercises physiotherapists usually provide.

Other instruments help control of blood flow, to control migraine, and control of brain electrical activity.

Other firms have come and gone in the biofeedback business in Britain. None has persevered as long as Aleph One.
