Network Links User Guide

C Quick start for experts

Note: only follow these instructions if you are genuinely sure of youractions and have done this before. If you are installing Network Linksfor the first time, please follow the more detailed instructions inChapter 3, Installation.

Check what hardware and software you have

Ethernet card manufacturer, Driver Module revision, ARM-side andPC-side networking existing or intended.

Copy the PCNE2 module and !NetRun file from floppy to !PCdirectory, as this is where the !Run file expects to find it.

Also copy any new Ethernet driver needed. You may want to put this inthe boot sequence (see next step).

If your Ethernet driver module needs updating then unplug the oneon the card.

If you have ARM-side networking in ROM then these modules need to bekilled, the new driver loaded, and the networking modules reinit-ed inthe correct order. See details elsewhere.

Uncomment the DCI4 (or DCI2 if that is what you want - see Checking EtherX versions ) lines in the !PC.!NetRun file.

Change the reference to EtherX to whateverethernet driver you are using. If you are not using ARM-side networkingthen the EtherX module can also be loaded here.Change the options on the RMLOAD PCNE2 line toreference:

  • the appropriate packet types (-p option)

  • if necessary, Ethernet driver name and unit (-doption). The -d option can usually be left blank, as theInet$EtherType variable should always be set to the correctcard type. You only need to use it if you need to use the multiple unitsfeature (see Chapter 6, Usingmultiple Ethernet driver units.

The -p option specifies the packet types you want PCNE2 topass across to !PC.
-pISOWindows networks, some Netwaresetups
-pIPXNovell Netware
-pTCPIPNFS, Internet/Winsock, some Netwaresetups

Reboot the machine, start !PC, and install the PC-side networkingsoftware.

Specify an NE2000 compatible network card, using interrupt5, port 340, and no DMA.
